Since last May, Faithwerks Church (www.faithwerks.org) has been worshipping at the Community Centre in the Oakridge-Marpole neighbourhood in Vancouver. I (Nick Suen) and the core of Faithwerkers have been experimenting with creative ways to live our faith on the weekdays – ways to bless the people who cross paths with us everyday.
It has been a faith adventure for us waiting and watching to see what God wants to do with us and through us, as the body of Christ living among people who don’t know him. So far, there has been no shortage of assurances from God that we are where he wants us – from the unexpected providence of a worship space we can effort, to the energy, commitment and unique gifting of each Faithwerker who has thrown in their lot with us. We keep bringing our small loaves and fishes, waiting for God to transform and multiply what we bring into a full blown blessing.
While we are continuing to gather, strengthen, and equip the core members of our community, we are at the same time exploring ways to go deeper in our friendships with unchurched friends, so that we can tell them about the Creator who loves them and longs to be reconciled to them in relationship. In the past months, core Faithwerkers have started a couple of book clubs and photography workshops – with the intention to bless our friends in practical ways, and to facilitate an environment where our friends can be themselves, make themselves known, and voice their deep longings. We are looking forward to good honest conversations about their joys, struggles and challenges in these groups. And we are counitng on the Spirit to make his presence felt.
Prayer Requests:
1. Pray for us as we keep looking to identify what God wants us doing, what needs doing – what no one is doing in our community, so we can make a positive difference where we are.
2. Pray for us as many of us look to experience our first harvest – the fruit at the climax of the process of leading someone to faith and discipleship.
3. Pray for us as we continue to look to staff our core of workers and gifting.
4. Pray for us as we learn to live a health spirtuality which makes space to encounter God’s Spirit and rely on him wholly for the resources to love and bless others, especially with the demands of the ministry both on the weekends and the weekdays.
